Sen. Sturtevant Votes with Confederate Hate Group over Constituents
Richmond, Va. – Today, the leadership of the Metro Richmond Area Young Democrats called out Sen. Glen Sturtevant for killing a bill that would have allowed the City of Richmond to prohibit firearms at permitted events. Last year the heavily armed hate group CSAII – The New Confederate States of America – twice descended on the City of Richmond, with the necessary precautions costing a combined $600,000 of taxpayer money.
In the aftermath of violent demonstrations on August 12 in Charlottesville, Governor McAuliffe established the Taskforce on Public Safety Preparedness and Response to Civil Unrest. Sen. Jennifer McClellan introduced Senate Bill 360 with the support of the Taskforce and City of Richmond Police.
In his role on the Courts of Justice Committee, Senator Sturtevant sided with the hate group and against many of his constituents, who have asked him to give law enforcement the tools to protect their communities threatened by heavily-armed protests. The vote to kill the bill took place along party lines with Democrats on the committee voting for considering the measure and Republicans voting against it.
MRAYD leadership encourages our members to call Sen. Sturtevant’s office at (804) 698-7510 and ask him to stand up for his constituents in the face of hate groups like the CSAII.
